I got my first view of wealth management from the passenger seat of a 1976 Econoline van.
Perhaps you wouldn’t call it wealth. My dad was managing his two-man electrician’s business out of that van, and he probably never made more than $50,000 in any year of his working life. And I shouldn’t say “passenger seat”: To economize, Dad bought that van with just one seat – his. So when I went to work with him the summer I was 9, I sat on an overturned milk crate.
Still, what I saw Dad doing that summer was, at its essence, wealth management: working hard to build a business that would provide for his family and future. That’s what many American business owners and entrepreneurs still do today. And that’s what I help clients do, as the leader of the Mahoney Team at Morgan Stanley.
With a team that shares my vision and passion for investment excellence, I design and monitor wealth management strategies that enable clients to navigate both risks and opportunities with confidence. As a Portfolio Management Director, I actively manage money for successful families, business owners and corporate executives, and confer regularly with their other professional advisors to make financial planning more coordinated and effective.
I entered this field in 1991 after graduating from Rutgers University. Since then, I have steadily built knowledge and experience in areas such as business succession planning, wealth management, investment consultation and philanthropy. For this expertise, I have been designated a Certified Private Wealth Advisor® by the Investment Management Consultants Association, and a Family Wealth Director by Morgan Stanley.
I have been honored to serve on Morgan Stanley’s Financial Advisor Advisory Council (FAAC) from 2009 to 2013. This high-profile, 20-member group meets regularly with top executives of the firm. Membership in this council, which I co-chaired for 3 years, has afforded me both opportunity and recognition as an investment leader and strategist. I regularly share my investment strategies in articles that have been published in Worth and Business Owner magazine. I am featured in the book Financial Intelligence 2011 and have appeared on Fox Business News and other news broadcasts.
My life outside work revolves around my wife, Pamela, our three daughters, and our New Jersey home and community. I am a trustee for the Hudson Farm Foundation in Andover, NJ, and a supporter and fundraiser for the Cure Tay-Sachs Foundation. I pursue outdoors hobbies including skiing, archery and bike riding. I enjoy watching my wife compete in equestrian events and my children play sports.
My goal, personally and professionally, remains much like my father’s: to protect and provide for family – mine, and yours. At the Mahoney Team, that is what we do.
